Subject: Uniting to Address Community Needs

In Maricopa County there are 667,000 people living in poverty. Children make up ¼ of this number.

This is why Valley of the Sun United Way is working to break the cycle of poverty by fighting for kids, families, and neighborhoods in our community. No other organization unites as many people to fight poverty in as many ways.

Your gift to United Way helps fund and facilitate many programs that provide both emergency assistance as well as long-term solutions that address the root of the issues. You can learn more about these programs in these community solution videos on YouTube.

It is very important to [COMPANY] to be a part of breaking the cycle of poverty and to contribute to our community in an impactful way and we feel as though our partnership with United Way is a great way to accomplish this.

Everyone is invited to come to a meeting on [DATE] at [LOCATION] to learn more about how the work of United Way makes an impact in our community and you are all welcome to join us at a volunteer experience on [DATE if applicable]. Contact [ECM] for more information at [EMAIL].

If you have any questions —any time throughout the campaign — please let [ECM] know. Don’t forget pledge forms are due at the end of [MONTH], and thanks for joining the fight with United Way.

Week 1

Subject: Fight for Kids

Out of the 667,000 people living in poverty in Maricopa County, ¼ are children. We are breaking the cycle of poverty by fighting for kids. Here are a few ways the [COMPANY] United Way campaign can help local kids:

  • Quality ChildcareTo help children prepare for kindergarten, United Way connects with local childcare centers to help them meet key indicators of quality centers and provide caregiver training and scholarships so all kids can have access to quality care.
  • School Readiness KitsChildren who aren’t reading proficiently by 3rd grade are 13 times more likely to drop out of high school. Designed by Scholastic and created with the help of education experts, these kits help families with kids ages 3-5 incorporate learning into their everyday life. With these bilingual resources, children will be reading to learn, instead of learning to read.
  • VelloIn Maricopa County, only 46% of students passed the state reading exam. If kids in Arizona aren’t reading at grade level by 4th grade, they are at risk of falling behind their peers. With Vello, volunteers are able to tutor students without leaving their home or office thanks to a simple screen sharing and audio system. In just 30 minutes a week, tutors provide the guided reading support students need to improve their literacy skills.
  • Quality After-School and Summer ProgramsEach year 3,000 students in Maricopa County are dropping out of high school. During a tough time in a child’s life, having the right tutor, mentor, and educational support can make a big difference. Through partnerships with places like Boys & Girls Club, these programs offer a safe place for kids to spend time outside of school.

These are just a few of the many things United Way does to fight poverty in Maricopa County. Join the fight with your gift today! Don’t forget, our goal is to raise [$$$$$] by the end of our campaign on [DATE]. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions about your donation, or volunteer opportunities!

Week 2

Subject: Fight for Families

To break the cycle of poverty for families means to address immediate needs and the very root causes of the problem. Here are a few ways our [COMPANY] United Way campaign is helping families in our community:

  • Ending Hunger at Home and in the Classroom – 82,000 households are food insecure, this means they may not know where their next meal will come from. Half of all students in Maricopa County are eligible for free and reduced lunch. With programs like Breakfast in the Classroom, WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks, and emergency meal assistance, families don’t have to worry about how their kids will eat.
  • Ending HomelessnessEach night, 6,000 people are experiencing homelessness – and only 2,000 shelter beds are available. United Way partners with shelters to provide emergency relief, and housing partners like A New Leaf to help families get a roof over their head, as well as various diversion partners to help people before homelessness begins.
  • Increase Financial Stability United Way offers the only free financial coach training in the Phoenix area to help coaches use an individualized approach to create detailed plans toward a family’s goal. In partnership with The Siemer Institute for Family Stability, families can also receive assistance in maintaining long-term housing while coaches work with everyone in the family to goal set and achieve academic and financial improvements.

These are just a few of the many things United Way does to fight poverty in Maricopa County. Join the fight with your gift today! We are [$$$$$] away from our goal of [$$$$$] by the end of our campaign on [DATE]. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!

Subject: Fight for Neighborhoods

Together, with Valley of the Sun United Way, our campaign is breaking the cycle of poverty by fighting for neighborhoods. This means collaborating with communities in many ways, including:

  • Community EmpowermentThrough collaboration in the neighborhoods of Maryvale, Guadalupe, and Central City, United Way is working to implement solutions that address the community’s specific needs, maintained by promotoras who are trained by the Promotores Hope Network.

These are just a few of the many things United Way does to fight poverty in Maricopa County. Join the fight with your gift today! Just [##] days left to reach our goal of [$$$$$] by the end of our campaign on [DATE]. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!

Week 4

Subject: Break the Cycle of Poverty

Through the [COMPANY] United Way campaign, we are game-changers in the fight to break the cycle of poverty in the Valley. The federal poverty definition means a family of 4 makes $2,000 a month or less. Let’s take a look at the expenses a family has to think about and their monthly cost:

  • Rent - $815
  • Utilities - $200
  • Child Care - $1,380
  • Transportation - $192

The cost of these alone is already more than $2,500 and doesn’t include health care, groceries, emergency situations or other expenses.

By giving a gift to Valley of the Sun United Way, you are giving these families the freedom from having to make tough choices about what to pay for and what their family will have to go without. Our campaign is coming to a close on [DATE] and we are [$$$$$] away from our goal of [$$$$$]. Please contact me if you have any questions.
